Last week before Christmas Break!!!!

DEAR STUDENTS AND PARENTS,

Wow, I am so impressed by my students' generosity with our pen pal gifts!  They really understand the true meaning of the season!  Our pen pals are going to be so happy with the gifts!  Their teacher got tears in her eyes when she saw how generous you were!  So did I!

This week will be busy ---- but we CAN do it.  The blog will be tentative, so if you are absent, please call a friend to check on the work you miss.  There will not be any tests because we did them last week, yeah. However, we will be finishing up with the math chapter, and the chapter review will count as a test.  My suggestion will be to CHECK YOUR WORK!

Thanks to the parents for all your support with driving to the various events we have had lately.  I know that it was busy, but I truly appreciate you tremendously!  I couldn't do my job without you!

Upcoming:
Christmas program rehearsal for the school will be this Tuesday morning at 8:30 in the auditorium- come join us.  It is always fun to watch.  Don't forget that on Wednesday, 12-15 the band will perform before the Christmas program at St. Patrick's Church, followed by the Christmas program.  There is nothing like joining the school family in this most precious event!  Extra credit will be given for all those who attend this event.  Who wouldn't want to see a real baby be Jesus- its always exciting, right!

Back from Thanksgiving Break!

Welcome Back!  I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun break.  Advent begins!  Let's begin preparing for Jesus's birthday celebration!

HOMEWORK HELP:
There will be changes in Homework help.  Because of basketball, I will not be able to do homework help because I will be driving to out of town games and attending games at school.  I am sorry about these changes, but this is what being a parent is all about.  I will resume regular homework help days after Christmas break!

Drivers needed:
Our first event will be the Nutcracker ballet on Friday, December 3, 2010.
The second event will be our communion service on Friday, December 10, 2010.
I will blog information soon.

Pen Pal gift drive:
Our service project will be to provide gift bags for our pen pal class.  The majority of the class comes from very low income families.  Last year this was so rewarding.  The children were so excited and very thankful for the gifts that the students gave them.  There are 16 students.  There are 4 girls and 12 boys.  They are about the same ages as my students.  I am requesting new items and toys that my students love.  I hope that each student can give at least two items.  They love art items/ craft items and toys.  Remember that giving is what the Christmas season is all about!  We need to start collecting items asap because
it would be great to give them their gifts before Christmas!  Please talk to your child about what it means to give without receiving gifts in return.  My students really are so loving and giving.  I am so proud of them and what you have taught them!  Thanks again!!!!!!

Conference Week & Red Ribbon Week 10-25 to 10-29

Report Cards have just gone out, and I am so proud of my students.  They have worked so hard, and it shows!

4th graders are.................AWESOME!!!!!!

Help:  I need someone to help with our fall program costumes.  We are studying Scotland and are doing traditional dances native to Scotland.  We need to make plaid sashes ( very easy to make ) for each child to wear for the fall program.  This job will require someone to cut strips of fabric for each child to wear.  We will use large safety pins to attach them.  I will pay for supplies, but I need for someone to take on the time to cut the fabric.  Of course this count as parent volunteer hours!  Please let me  know ASAP so we can get started.  Thanks.

RED RIBBON WEEK SCHEDULE:
Monday- hat day
Tuesday- sun glasses
Wed- crazy socks
Thursday- red & white free dress with donation of canned food
Friday- costumes

Week 10

The first quarter has ended and I am so proud of all my students.  They have adjusted to fourth grade very well.  Parents and students give yourselves a pat on the back!!!!! Thanks to all the parents who drove for the class last Friday to Hampshire and Emeritus.  Thanks to all my students for having such great behavior.  I was very proud of you!

*2nd quarter- all work will be written in cursive starting now.  Work may take a little longer now- so keep that in mind when they are doing homework.

**If you are reading this blog, please give me a high five Monday morning!!! I realize that just the parents are reading this.  However, please have your child read the blog too.  It is a great habit for them do go over the work for the week.

***This week will busy.  We have an English test (Nouns) on Tuesday.  The math test is Wednesday.  We will also have a spelling and reading test on Friday.  As you can see I have spread them out so that they are not on the same days, except for spelling and reading.

Thanks to Mrs. Hobbs! for coming in several weeks to teach the class more about good nutrition habits----that was very enlightening!!!!!

Thanks to Mrs Bryan!  She will be teaching the class a Scottish style dance for the FALL PROGRAM.  I will need help with a simple costume idea.  If you would be willing to help, please come see me soon.  We will need to make simple sashes (plaid) for the students to wear.  It will be a traditional accessory like a Scottish clan would wear----- We will be part of the OLM clan.

The end of the first quarter is this Friday 10-15-10

So Far this year has been a very positive one.  My students show such excitement for everything they are learning, and for any teacher, it fills my heart with pride.  Fourth grade is the year that students must learn more about working independently as well as in a group.  They do this very well.  Students......... you make me so PROUD!!!!!

AS FOR HOMEWORK:  I have looked closely to the amount and type of work that has been assigned.  All work we do in class starts as guided and then they are required to finish the assignments independently.  This will help them to be more independent.  Please have your child work on their own, unless they have questions.  You may check their work after, but do this with them so they can see what they miss and can correct it with help.  This will reinforce the concepts being taught.  As always reading and math facts are very beneficial, however, if your child has more than enough homework for the night, don't worry about this.  I WILL NOT REQUIRE THIS AS NIGHTLY HOMEWORK OR NEED FOR YOU TO SIGN THE PLANNER- FOR THESE ACTIVITIES.  As a parent and a teacher these are important-------when you have time.  It is always encouraged!

******BOOK PROJECTS  are assigned every few weeks and will require them to read.  I do give them time in class, but some may need to be done at home.  Please keep this in mind.  The next project will be on a biography book.  We will check out a new book this Monday. It will be due Monday 11-1-10.  That gives them a few weeks to complete.

*******ST. VINCENT LUNCHES- OUR TURN IS THIS FRIDAY, BUT I ENCOURAGE THEM TO, IF THEY CAN, TO BRING ONE EACH WEEK.  THIS IS ONE WAY TO PUT THEIR FAITH INTO PRACTICE-------ACTIVE FAITH-FILLED PEOPLE!!!!!

*********HOMEWORK HELP will be this Monday and Wednesday. When my students finish their work from the day I might cancel it.  I have them call around lunch.  If this will be a problem, please let me know.

********Mission trip- PLEASE TURN IN YOUR PERMISSION SLIP ASAP.  AND IF YOU STILL NEED TO TURN IN VIA BUS MONEY PLEASE DO SO.  iF THIS IS GOING TO BE A FINANCIAL HARDSHIP PLEASE LET ME KNOW.....ALL STUDENTS WILL GO REGARDLESS!

October 4th thru October 7th

My students have really been working hard and have impressed me very much!  Keep it up guys!  Please review the rubric for conduct and go over it with your child.  Many students are talking which really increases the load of work that goes home at night.  However, many are very quiet, but that won't ensure an "A" in conduct.  Students need to be looking for ways to help around the classroom and with other students.  They need to remember to do this along with participation while not being disruptive at the same time.  Students must be done with their work before they help around the classroom.  Please discuss this with your child, thanks for your support!

Whenever there is a writing assignment, I ask that you help them with proofreading.  This will reinforce what I am doing in the classroom.  Also when you have them correct errors right away, it will reinforce the correct way things should be.

upcoming dates this week:
  1. Science test on chapter A/2 - Tuesday 10-5-10
  2. Nonfiction book project- due Thursday 10-7-10.  Please check over their work for spelling and complete sentences.  Also check for neatness.  This will count for a handwriting grade!

  • Our field trip to San Juan Bautista on Friday, November 12, 2010.  A letter will be sent home  about the trip.  Another letter will be sent home concerning transportation- We want to take a VIA bus.  This will take a donation of 15 to 20 dollars per students.  We need to know how many parents will be attending.  Parents should pitch in a donation.  I love for any parents to attend.  If  you are attending for hours you must also  chaperone a group.
  • Our country for international night will be Scotland!  If you are Scottish, and have items for us to use that would be great !  Eventually we will be researching and doing activities to learn more about our country.  Each student will be given a topic to research for our class.

ITBS TESTING WEEK!

Hey 4th graders and parents!

All week we will be testing in the morning until 11:00 AM or so.  Please remember not to make appointments for the mornings this week. If you need to bring your child a lunch or something they have forgotten at home, please take it to the office, not the classroom.  Thank you for your understanding of this matter.

I really want to thank all the parents who have brought or will be bringing in a snack this week!
Because it is testing week, our schedule will be different each day.  The work we do will be done in school.  No homework will be assigned.  Please check your child's planner to see what your child has done and sign it once for the day please, Thanks again!

Progress reports have gone out, and I want you to remember that it is just that---A progress report.  I have had a few questions or concerns about conduct and/or effort as well as handwriting.  For conduct,  we have a rubric that we are to follow. I sent that home at the beginning of the year.  Effort grades are based on their overall effort on daily work as well as completing homework every night .  Also learning how to be responsible to get their planners signed or returning the work the next day-complete- is important too.  Always remember you can come see me about any concerns or questions you might have.  Or if you need more than a min. please call the office to set up an appointment.  As for handwriting, we also have a rubric that we follow.  We will be practicing more and more with cursive and they will improve!

Some of the things we will be doing this week :
  • science lab actvities
  • writing- we will be working on each part of the writing process as we write narratives this week
  • handwriting practice
  • reading from social studies and science lessons & working on notes etc.
There will be no other tests this week !!!!

REMEMBER PRACTICING THE BASIC MATH FACTS ON A DAILY BASIS WILL HELP YOUR CHILD BUILD A STRONG FOUNDATION IN MATH.  WHEN THEY KNOW THEM, THEY ONLY HAVE TO LEARN OR WORRY ABOUT THE NEW CONCEPTS BEING TAUGHT.  THIS WILL HELP THEM BE MORE ACCURATE AND WORK AT A QUICKER PACE!!!!! PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, RIGHT??!!

It's the fourth week of school!!!!

 Dear Students and parents:
So far the 4th graders are working very hard.  They have welcomed the challenges of 4th grade with open minds! I am so proud of them, too.  We need to work on not chatting during transition time.  Changing tasks quickly will ensure that we have the required time for each subject.  When this happens we can get more time in to complete work so that it does not have to go home! I know that students AND parents will like that !

Saints:  This year our school is focusing on Saints as Prayer Partners.  Each class will choose a saint for their class.  We will also be choosing a Saint for each student in my class.  If your child's name is a Saint name they should choose that saint. If not they can choose a saint of their choice.  Start looking now.

ITBS Testing will be starting in two weeks.  PLEASE make sure your child gets to bed early to get a good nights sleep.  Also, make sure they have a full breakfast.  Thank you!

3rd week of school !!!!!!

Welcome to the 3rd week of school!

Everyone seems to be settling in to school now, even me!  I can tell they are getting relaxed because they are talking more!  Red cards will be given this week if they are talking after a warning has been given.  The work load has been light, but that will start to pick up.  Remind your child that when they pay attention and not talk they won't see a lot of homework because there is a lot of time given to complete work.  This week we will go to the library and  choose a book to read.  This book will need to be completed in 3 weeks along with some kind of project.  Each night along with practicing math facts, they will need to read for 15 min. Please sign the planner for the day, for math facts practice, and for reading independently for 15 min.  That means sign the planner (or initial it) for three things.  I hope that helps clarify things.

Homework Help:
Monday and Wednesday 2:45 to 3:30 no later

Week 2- August 23, 2010 to August 27, 2010

Hey 4th graders and parents!!! Welcome to the 2nd week of school.  So far all is well!  I can see the students are warming up to the daily schedule and doing work. We are getting a little chatty and will need to start settling down to business.  The noise level has begun to get louder, and we will need to get better at this.  Most students are getting work done and homework completed.  However, some have been leaving things at home or not completing nightly homework. This is a very important component to fourth grade.  This week will start picking up , so they might have more work to do at home.  As a reminder, please check the planner and the work so that all is completed.  I will start giving warning and then red cards when rules are not followed or homework is not completed on time.  This is part of their conduct and effort grades! When/ If your child receives 5 red cards, they will get a detention.  I know this seems harsh, but another crucial component to 4th grade is building independence and responsibility.  Please help them by going over the planner and their work to see that it is completed.  I go over the planner and uncompleted work is always circled in their planner.  All work for the day will be in their homework folder.

Homework Help:
This will start Next Week.  I will have it Monday and Wednesdays until 3:30.  If your child is not picked up at that time, they will be sent to extended care and you will be charged for the time they are there.  If you have an older child that has practice, they can not stay until that child is done with practice unless they are enrolled in extended care.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

New skill:
This week we will begin note taking in science.  We will do most of this as a guided assignment, but sometimes they will have to complete the days notes at home.  For the next chapter in Social Studies, we will begin outlining.  This too will be a guided activity.  They will keep these assignments in their homework folder as we work on it until we complete the chapter.  I will collect these assignments after the test for a grade--- so neatness counts!!!!
