Here are a few reminders:
The next two weeks will full of excitement as we prepare for the Birthday of Jesus. With this time of year plans can change on a daily basis. I will list the basic information for each subject, but will not do the daily list of work. If your child is absent, please call and I will send the work to the office. I have had students who are absent and don't get their work made up. It is ultimately their responsibility. The end of the quarter is the Friday we get out for Christmas vacation. Please remember this will be the last day all work for the 2nd quarter is due. Thank you.

week 11-28-2011
It's MISSION PROJECT time!!!!! We will be doing mission presentations all week. Your child must be ready to present their report using their boards to explain information about their missions. This is the requirement. If your child has built a mission, please come right to the classroom first thing Monday morning so we can get them set up. Some will be in faculty room and other classes not being used as a classroom so they will not be touched. When we are done with the presentations, they will be displayed in the auditorium for display so the whole school can see them.
Penance- will be Wednesday morning. Please discuss the importance of penance and have them get ready- practice the Act of Contrition and know the sins they want to tell the priest. We are so lucky to be able to have this chance to be forgiven and become closer to God.
As a class service project, we have written pen pal letters to our pen pal class in Los Banos. This class is a special education class. Mr. Hoffart has come in to share what it is like to have learning challenges. This has been a wonderful experience for my class because they have come to understand that we are all unique children of God. Just because we don't all learn the same way, we are still human beings and loved by God. My sister and I have paired up several times to do this, because it gives our children experiences in sharing and toleration- something our world seems to be lacking. Her class is one that has learning challenges as well as financial challenges. Her class is a very low income group, and because of this we have worked together to help provide each child with something for the holidays. I am asking each child to bring in something small to put in a gift bag for each child. We need scarves, socks, gloves, hats, toiletries, and/ or small games, school supplies, or toys. This should not be something expensive, but something meaningful- something they would like. These children are ages 8-12, and I know that they would love anything that my students would pick out. I will talk to my class about this project and they can volunteer to bring in 1-2 items. I will also need15 gift bags- maybe something you have laying around. The best items are ones that can be for a boy or girl- not specific to one group. I am asking that we have all items in byWed. December 7, 2011 please. We will need to have them ready for pick before the holidays. Thank you for all your support and generosity! Merry Christmas!!!!

first week of October!
Dear parents
We have been working on building complete sentences and making paragraphs. Some students are struggling with making basic complete sentences. One way you can help is by checking their homework. Please check homework for capitalizing the first word of each sentence and when the word is a proper noun. Also, check to see that they use punctuation at the end of each sentence.
Another concern is counting money. Please practice counting money and giving change. This is a crucial life skill that they must know. A little help will go a long way in what we are covering in math. Thanks for the help.
This Tuesday is the Blessing of the Animals Mass. Students may wear shorts because the Mass is at 1:15 at the front of the school. If you are bringing an animal bring the animal at that time. Parents and their family pets will sit at the back. Students must sit with their class until after the Mass when the animals are to blessed. Thank you for your cooperation with this.
#1-5 corresponds with the days of the week Mon-Fri.

no spelling this week

There will be no reading story this week. Students will be learning about Indian legend stories. The students will write their own Indian legend story with their tribe(coloring page from last week) in mind. This writing will be done in class, and they might need to take stories home to help with proofreading and editing sometime this week. I want this to be the student's work, but helping in the area of spelling and punctuation is always a good thing when they are learning to write. Check their planners daily to see if they need to complete any portion of this assignment at home for homework on any given night this week. Thank you.

Language arts
There will be no reading story this week. Students will be learning about Indian legend stories. The students will write their own Indian legend story with their tribe(coloring page from last week) in mind. This writing will be done in class, and they might need to take stories home to help with proofreading and editing sometime this week. I want this to be the student's work, but helping in the area of spelling and punctuation is always a good thing when they are learning to write. Check their planners daily to see if they need to complete any portion of this assignment at home for homework on any given night this week. Thank you.

Last week of September 2011
Thanks to all the wonderful parents who made sure my students had a healthy snack each day of testing week. Thanks to Mrs. Pellicano for organizing us so well!!! Please read all of the blog because I am trying something new with how I post the week's work. It will be organized by subject then by day rather than day then subject. ITBS TESTING WEEK!!!!
It's that time again-----to see all your child knows. This test is very important because it is used to plan curriculum for effectively. Please have your child get to bed early and make sure they eat breakfast. I have parents bringing in healthy snacks for our break, but this is not a substitute for a good breakfast!
This blog will not be a detailed day to day plan because we will be working on activities in class that will not go home as homework.
Things you should know
Here is what we will be working on this week in class:
Science- lab activities, and lesson 3 notes
SS- I will begin teaching outlining using the next chapter in social studies. I have a fill in outline to start with so they can see what it should look like. We will read, discuss the main points, then add them to our outlines. Again this will be done in school this week.
Writing- we will learning how to write a 3 paragraph essay. It will be about an event they have experienced. In order to teach them this narrative essay I will give them a easy topic that we can group write a sample in class, then I will guide them in other steps in the writing process. By the end of the week they will bring home the rough draft for you to read.......and help them improve their technique.
Thank you in advance for this reinforcement at home!
Handwriting- we will continue to practice our cursive in class. Starting 2nd quarter, all work will be in cursive.
PLEASE REMIND YOUR CHILD ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD SLEEP AND EATING A GOOD BREAKFAST EACH MORNING!!!!
A SHOUT OUT AND THANK YOU TO THE PARENTS WHO BRING IN SNACKS THIS WEEK!!!!
This blog will not be a detailed day to day plan because we will be working on activities in class that will not go home as homework.
Things you should know
- Friday is a 12:30 dismissal
- my students are in great need of practice with their multiplication facts---Wow we need work on this . It would be great to drill them at home, in the car, at the dinner table....anywhere you can catch them. Haha. Yes I know that on regular nights( not during testing) there is homework, but some nights there isn't math......... There should be. This is where that drilling comes in. To help your child, this is to be done regularly at home. Thank you for helping your child!!!!

Week of 9-12-11
Welcome Back!! I have enjoyed teaching your children very much. Many are working so hard. Planners are signed, homework/classwork is completed each day, and so many are great helpers. I can tell that some students are having a bit of trouble with the daily responsibilities. This is where you, that parents, must step in. Fourth grade is the year that we MUST help your child go from a dependent to an independent learner. They will need help by going through their planners and checking that all work is completed. If you are not sure, check the blog. All unfinished and finished work/homework MUST be in their homework folder. Please do not sign the planner unless all work has been check for completion, especially if your child is having trouble with remembering to complete their work. It really doesn't help to just sign a contract without reading through it, right. The planner is like their work contract. Yes, red cards are given for their planner not being signed, but they are also given for unfinished work. So please sign the planner when you have checked the work. That would help them see the importance in being responsible and truthful. When they complete their work on time they will a great sense in pride and accomplishment that only they can give themselves!!!!!!!
The ITBS test will begin next week and go through Thursday. I would like to serve yummy and healthy snacks during a break each day of the test. I need volunteers to sign up to bring a snack. Holly Pellicano is our head room mom so please call to set this up with her. Thanks again. The kids love this and will really appreciate it too!

Week 3 8-29 to 9-2
Welcome to the 3rd week of school. I am very impressed with my students and how hard they are working. I always set very high expectations and many of them are meeting or even exceeding them. I believe whole heartily that when you set high goals for them, they will work for them!!! Go 4th graders!!!!! A few of my students, though, are not completing their classwork/homework. My policy is that when work isn't finished, It must be completed as homework that night. Unless we have just started a note sheet or project/ long term writing assignment another due date is given. That will be on the blog and in the planner. It is crucial to check both of these for the most up-to-date information. I have allowed some to complete such work at recess, but because I have gone over this and it was in my parent letter, I will now start issuing red cards for each assignment not completed. They must finish the work as well. I know that it may seem harsh, but this is truly a student responsibility that they must learn this year. If you need to talk to me about this issue or any other issue, my door is always open or you may write me a note. You can call school at 722-7496 and leave me a message, or email me at lynnee73@sbcglobal.net
I have also found that many students don't know their basic math facts very well. This is an essential part in improving math grades and for developing a strong background for the upper grades. A good practice is 10 minutes a day-- in the car at the dinner table or after they have finished their daily work/ homework. This is where you as parents come in. Please help them to practice. Trust me, you will see a huge improvement in their math scores when they know the basics!!! We will be taking several math facts tests a week. This week I will focus on addition. Thanks for your help!
This weeks reminders:
- Friday is a Mass day and 12:30 dismissal
- unit 2 spelling test - Friday
- Reading test on "The Lost Lake"- Friday
- Library and computers will begin. Students will be checking out a book that they must finish reading and do a book project on (This will be handed out Monday) The Due date will be announced. 4th graders will be reading 2 books a quarter and doing some sort of project with the books they complete. The types of books will change so they get an opportunity to try different styles of literature.
Coming up
- The science vocabulary test will be next week on Wednesday 9-7-11- This will only cover what's on their cards
- Their first book project will be due in 3 weeks- on Friday 9-16-11- That means they need to read the book and do the project by that date so it's turned in on time. I give them 10 minutes a day to read and when they are done with an assignment they may read. This project may require them to read at home as well. Help keep them organized and help them pace the time to not have to do this at the last minute. No extensions will be given. Thank you

Week 1-14-2011 to 1-21-2011
Dear parents
I have had several of you speak to me about the increase in homework. Yes, we are transitioning to 5th grade, but the recent talking and visiting has increased greatly. Please encourage your child to not talk beacuse I am giving ample time to complete or almost complete assignments in class. I assure you that I am constantly observing and changing plans according to the amout of work given. I take a poll to see if the majority have not completed their work to change or modify assignments as needed. I really appreciate the parents who come to me to discuss this issue to assure that I keep homework at a normal level. Now, with the daily reading, I do not consider this homework, but a way of life. Remember your child should be reading each day about 20 min. in order to complete the book and project by the due date. Reading shouldn't be a chore, but an activity.
Thanks so much for keeping me up-to-date and for all your support. This is how we are able to keep open communication positive. We should work together to educate your child.
God Bless all of you,
Love, Mrs. M
